The year was 1986. The very first signs of what we would later get to know as 'the scene' had surfaced two years earlier, on the commodore 64. That scene had now begun maturing slightly, and in addition to a myriad of cracking groups, also some of the very first stand-alone intros and demos were getting released. The Amiga scene was in its infancy. There were a handful of groups, no more than 10, mostly doing cracks. There were no (at least known to us) copy parties yet, the first ones started appearing only next year, in 1987. Two very important computers was released to the public from Commodore this year; The Amiga 1000 and the c64's 'successor', the Commodore 128. While the 128 never became the expected success, the Amiga took the world by storm; it was the most powerful home computer anyone had ever seen! This was also the year that the very first version of what would become one of the amiga's strongest software packages was released; Deluxe Paint. The Final Cartridge II was released for the c64. --- 1987 ------------------------------------------------------------------ amiga demo of the year........................................................n/a intro of the year.......................................................n/a significant releases....................................................n/a c64 demo of the year........................................................n/a significant releases....................................................n/a In 1987 the very first Amiga demos started appearing, but it was still early, early days. Most people were doing their thing on the C64 still... The only notable parties were the frequent ones in Venlo, Holland - fondly referred to today as the 'Venlo Meetings', and the forerunners of the modern 'computer parties'. The first copy parties (as they were known in those days) started appearing this year. I August, a tool was released that would change the demo world forever. A german coder by the name of Karsten Obarski released his music composition program "SoundTracker" through the software house EAS. The original version supported 5 effects; Portamento Up/Down, Set Volume, Set Secondary Tempo and Arpeggio =] Version 1.21 was released in december. hardware - Two new Amigas were introduced this year, the A500 and the A2000. The 'new' C64 was released, to replace the more bulky, old one...and I bought one ;) Version 1.2 of the Amiga operating system was released. One of the most popular (and most controversial) c64 cartridges were released, The Final Cartridge III. --- partyindex ------------------------------------------------------------ 24-26.07 The Danish Circle party. 24-26.07 Danish Gold Copy Party. .10 NTC and Defiers Hacker Party. .12 Finnish Gold/The Jezebels Union party. 05.12 Fantasy Cracking Service (FCS) Copy Party. 18-21.12 Triad and Fairlight Copy Party. 19.12 Venlo Meeting. 24-26.07 The Danish Circle party. ---------------------------------- Held in Soroe (Sorø), Denmark by The Danish Circle (TDC) in an old scout hut. The amount of groups and releases were increasing dramatically for both the c64 and amiga this year, and copyparties were starting to appear every week as opposed to about every month, which was the norm last year... This year, version 1.3 of the Amiga operating system was released, and among the news was the new filesystem (FFS) for harddisks. The new version of the OS created compatibility problems with some older demos, and it quickly became a rule at copy parties that demos had to work on the new version of the OS. The A590 external harddisk, and the new 1084S stereo monitor was also released for Amigas. The Expert Cartridge for the C64 was released. And if you think emulators are a new thing, think again! This year not one but TWO c64 emulators were released for the amiga, GO!64 and the appropriately named The C64 Emulator (Readysoft). :) A Danish democoder called Sodan (Sören Grönbeck), who had come from the c64 scene where he a.o. invented the socalled tech-tech routine, released his first commercial amiga game this year; "Sword of Sodan" - probably the first fully scene-originated amiga game to be released commercially! His second game, "Datastorm", was also released this year, through Visionary Design Technologies. chronologically... In January of 1988, the first issue of Alpha Flight's "Cracker Journal" - the very first amiga magazine on a disk - diskmag - was released. It was joined by two or three more mags by the end of the year, and the number was still rising... It was originally scheduled be held a few weeks earlier, but had to be postponed. The entrance fee was 30FIN, which most people found to be a tad high, especially as it included no other luxuries. At 20:00 on friday, the first day of the party, the school's principal came and was distraught by the fact that people were drinking alcohol inside the school. Everything was fine for a small while, but then someone broke a bottle, and the principal lost his head. He threatened to call the police if everyone did not leave the school at once, and when noone did, the police finally had to come. Everyone was thrown out of the school, but after some reasoning the people who had no possible way to get home were allowed into the gymnastics hall for the night. Even though the party continued on saturday and sunday in a different location, most people went home after the pretty disastrous friday. Naturally people were a little pissed off =] Apparently the organizer of the original event (it was simply called the "Edderheim Party") didn't think anybody would turn up, and was playing football instead. However, some of the attendants found a nearby pizzera, and payed the owner to close his doors for other customers - and just sat down and had a spontaneous party there! The Shadows were announced as one of the organizing groups at an early stage, but this was changed to Panoramic Designs when Shadows died and PD was born on its ashes. Reportedly about 250-300 people attended from all over europe, though some reports have speculated it was less. The entrance fee was 150NOK. This was a legal party, illegal copying was banned, but... =] The relatively low number of attendees was probably due to the 'big' Amiga Conference 90 being held in Denmark simultaneously. There were also a few hardware theft problems. Goblin/GP (c64) cracked and spread the game "Ski or Die" at the party. The deadlines for the competitions were pushed back, rumours say that this was in order for co-arrangers Panoramic Designs to finish their demo. The results of the c64 demo competition was decided by a jury made up of Full Force and Hoaxers members. The general opinion of the party was seemingly that the organizing could have been much better, and the foreigners complained about all announcements over the pa were done in Norwegian. Due to recent problems with the Police during similar events, there was a ban on illegal copying. Among the things not on the results list, there was a TwinTris competition held by the programmer himself, and a Stunt Car Racer competition. The graphics and music (40 entries submitted) competitions took place as planned, but the demo competition was (naturally) delayed about four hours. This was due to the fact that Andromeda and Pananoramic Designs didn't finish their demos on time. The party was divided into two areas; the amiga people, which were the majority, and the c64 users, which were given their own, smaller area. Since Coca Cola sponsored the party, they were very strict about any Coke obtained from anywhere but their kiosk, where the prices were less than reasonable. This resulted in a first for demo parties - Coke smuggling! Paradox didn't bring a single computer, but lots of beer, which was confiscated. The system for the compos were as follows: The arrangers picked out the 5 best tunes, the 10 best pictures and the 10 best demos, which were then shown. Then, ONE person from each group were to hand in that groups' votes; one group - one vote. This system caused some irritation. Almost 350 people attended, of which four were female :) The party was originally intended to be an Amiga and C64 party, but due to the fact that another group called WOT was holding a C64 party, they spread rumours among the 64'ers that this party was cancelled! As a result, there were only about 15 C64 users on the party, though all the big groups were represented. There was a kiosk inside the party hall, where you could buy Coke, food, disks etc. There was no voting system, the winners were instead decided by the arrangers. The graphics and music compos were decided by Theatre and Network, while they left the music to some Motion members. It was, all in all, a golden year for demos - undoubtedly the best yet. I guess it just happened to be the crossroads, the year where people's skills came up to a great level at the same time as the Amiga machine had a little way to go before everything was done. The result was a lot of great-looking demos with new and innovative effects, and titles like "Enigma", "Global Trash", "Hardwired", "Alfa & Omega", "Virtual World" and "Voyage" will bring a gleam to the eye of any scene nostalgic... It was also a true pioneer year for demo parties. The first installations of the two giants The Gathering and The Party was held this year. And when Alcatraz ("Odyssey") beat The Silents ("Hardwired") at The Party, the debate raged for months... At 14th of June, Destroyer/Alpha Flight (sysop 'PARADISE') was busted, and the following day another board ('BOARD ROYAL') got taken down. This lead to a period of widespread panic throughout the German modem scene, and over 20 boards were taken offline; some permanently. The panic soon proved to be a spoof, though, set alight by people posting fake messages on some of the boards. The big culprit was blamed on the use of BlueBoxing to some of these boards, but after a while most boards got online again, and things settled more or less back to normal. hardware - This was the year Commodore launched their failed CDTV, made more or less to compete with Philips' similar CD-I. It was supposed to be for both c64 and Amiga. There was an invitation text printed in the c64 diskmag "Corruption #9". Also, there's text in PD's "Psykolog" demo, saying it was released there. Often referred to as the 'Porsgrunn Party'. About 800-900 people attended. There were criticisms directed at the party, since promises made in the invitation were not held. First of all, the entrance fee mysteriously rose before the party opened. A jury of 8 people were appointed to judge the competitions, no public voting was carried out. More than 70 contributions were made for the music competition, but only 11 were judged and ranked. Maniacs of Noise competed with two tunes, none of which were selected by the jury.
